Watan Rao on Starting Stand-Up Comedy in 2019

Watan Rao said he started stand-up comedy in 2019 after going to watch a comedy show.

Seeing comedians perform on stage made him interested in the art form. He wanted to try it himself and soon started looking for opportunities to perform.

For him, the first few minutes on stage were enough to understand that comedy was something he wanted to continue.

Watan Rao on His 19th Canvas Laugh Club Audition

The journey was not easy in the beginning. Watan Rao revealed that he cleared his Canvas Laugh Club audition on his 19th attempt. Even before getting selected, performing on stage gave him confidence that he could actually make people laugh.

He said those few minutes on stage felt different because, for that time, he did not think about anything else. His only focus was the performance.

Watan Rao on How He Writes His Comedy

He said around 80% of his work is done before he reaches the stage. The remaining 20% is about checking the flow and finding a better way to present the material.

His jokes often start with real-life experiences. He then adds exaggeration and other elements to turn those experiences into comedy.

Watan Rao on Why Bad Memories Can Make Good Jokes

Watan Rao believes some of the best comedy can come from the worst memories. Instead of simply telling a real story, a comedian can look at an uncomfortable or difficult experience from a different angle and find the funny side.

This is also visible in his own comedy, where personal experiences and everyday situations become part of his material.

Watan Rao on the Pressure to Go Viral

The conversation also touched on the pressure to go viral. Watan Rao said every artist wants their content to reach more people, but his storytelling style does not always fit short-form content.

His jokes can depend on a complete story. When that story is cut into a short Reel, some of the context can disappear.

He believes this is one reason why some of his longer comedy material may not work in the same way as a short viral clip.

Watan Rao on a Comedy Show That Did Not Work

Watan Rao also spoke about the reality of having a bad performance. He recalled a show where his material did not connect with the audience as he expected. For a comedian, such moments can be difficult, but they are also part of the learning process.

He believes a comedian has a responsibility towards the audience because people buy tickets, spend their time and come to watch them perform.

Watan Rao on Family Pressure During His Struggle

Building a career in comedy also comes with pressure from family. Watan Rao spoke about coming from a middle-class family and how difficult it can be when a person is spending money on performances while the career is still growing.

He also talked about his younger brother Vijay Yadav, who is involved in comedy as well. For families, the question is often simple: when will the struggle turn into a stable career? For an artist, however, the answer can take years.

Watan Rao on Haryanvi Culture and Young People

The conversation was not limited to comedy. Watan Rao also shared his concern about the changing relationship between Haryana’s young generation and the Haryanvi language.

He pointed out that many young people are increasingly speaking Hindi and English, even within families where Haryanvi was traditionally spoken.

For him, moving forward in life does not mean leaving your roots behind. He believes people can become successful while still staying connected to their culture.

Watan Rao believes Haryanvi identity can be a strength rather than something people need to hide. During the conversation, he spoke about how people sometimes try to change their accent or behaviour to fit in outside Haryana. His view is simple: there is no need to become someone else just to move forward.

Watan Rao believes Haryana has an audience for stand-up comedy, but the local ecosystem is still developing. He mentioned cities such as Rohtak, Panipat and Hisar as places where a stronger comedy scene can grow. According to him, regular shows, venues and opportunities can help comedians build an audience within Haryana instead of always depending on bigger cities.

Watan Rao on Why His Struggle Is Still Not Over

Despite years of performing, Watan Rao does not believe his struggle is over. For him, a comedian’s real success is when people are willing to buy tickets to watch them perform. Until that happens consistently, there is still more work to do.

For Watan Rao, comedy is not only about making money. It is an art form that allows him to write, perform and connect with people. His journey from starting stand-up in 2019 to building his own style is still continuing.
