On the occasion of World Laughter Day, Kapil Sharma brought together veteran comedian Sunil Pal and internet comedian Samay Raina on the same stage. What followed quickly became one of the most talked-about moments from the episode.
The Roast That Took Over the Episode
During their interaction, Samay repeatedly roasted Sunil Pal while the audience reacted with laughter. Some viewers enjoyed the banter and called it entertaining. Others felt Sunil was being unnecessarily humiliated on national television.
At the same time, another section of social media criticised Sunil’s own jokes, calling parts of his comedy outdated and cringe.
The clips spread everywhere within hours. But according to Sunil himself, he had walked into the show expecting something completely different.
Sunil Pal Says He Came Prepared for Stand-Up
In a recent interview with Zee Switch, Sunil revealed that he was originally invited to perform stand-up comedy on the show.
According to him, he had already been informed that Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia would also appear in the episode. But he believed his role was simple — perform comedy and leave.
“Mujhe standup karne ke liye bulaya gaya tha,” Sunil explained. He said he had prepared accordingly before arriving on set.
But once the shoot started, things changed.
Instead of a stand-up segment, the episode turned into a roast-heavy interaction where Samay continuously took digs at him. Sunil admitted he was not mentally prepared for that format.
He clarified that he does not consider it a betrayal. But he also made it clear that what happened on stage was very different from what he had imagined before coming to the show.
The Backstory Between Sunil Pal and Samay Raina
The awkwardness between the two comedians did not begin on The Great Indian Kapil Show.
Last year, Samay Raina and Ranveer Allahbadia became part of a major controversy after comments made during Samay’s show India’s Got Latent triggered backlash online. Reports suggested that multiple FIRs were filed after the incident, leading Samay to remove the show from YouTube.
After the controversy, Sunil Pal publicly criticised Samay and even referred to him as a “terrorist” during interviews and reactions online.
Later, Samay responded in his own style. During one of his comedy specials, he took indirect digs at Sunil and referenced those comments on stage.
So when both comedians appeared together on Kapil Sharma’s show, many viewers already expected tension between them. What nobody expected was how far the roasting would go during the actual episode.
