India has lost one of its greatest visual storytellers. Raghu Rai, the legendary photojournalist whose work defined how the world sees India, passed away on April 26, 2026, at the age of 83. His death was confirmed by his family, marking the end of a career that spanned more than five decades.
What Happened
According to his son, Nitin Rai, Raghu Rai had been battling cancer over the past two years. While he initially recovered from prostate cancer and later stomach complications, the illness eventually spread to his brain, along with age-related health issues.
He is survived by his wife Gurmeet, son Nitin, and daughters Lagan, Avani, and Purvai. His last rites are scheduled to take place at the Lodhi Road Cremation Ground on Sunday evening.
Raghu Rai: From Engineer to Icon
Born on December 18, 1942, in Jhang (now in Pakistan), Raghu was initially trained as a civil engineer. His journey into photography began at the age of 23, inspired by his elder brother.
In 1966, he joined The Statesman as its chief photographer — a move that would shape the future of Indian photojournalism.
