Meet VM Bechain: Haryanvi Poet Who Started from Absolute Zero
"VM Bechain started his life by polishing shoes on the streets of Bhiwani. Today, he holds a world record and has won the biggest government awards. Read the true story of a small-town boy who started from zero and made Haryana proud."

Every day, we see young boys and girls on Instagram who want to become famous overnight. They make short videos and reels just to get quick views. But the real heroes of our land are built differently. VM Bechain biography will show you how a poor boy from a small town changed his destiny.
They spend their entire lives working hard to protect their roots. One such beautiful name from Haryana is Vinod Mehra, whom everyone lovingly calls VM Bechain. Today, he is a massive inspiration for anyone who loves writing. But his life was not always full of camera lights and big awards. This great VM Bechain Haryanvi poet started his journey from absolute zero, on the tough streets of Haryana.
Early Struggle at Bhiwani Ghantaghar
Every big success story has a past full of tears, sacrifices, and extreme hard work. For Vinod, his early days belong to the pavement of the famous town of Bhiwani. His father, Shri Khusiram Mehra, worked very hard as a local cobbler.
As a young schoolboy, Vinod did not have a comfortable life. To help his father and arrange two simple meals for the family, he spent his days sitting on the dirty ground at the famous Bhiwani Ghantaghar writer spot. He polished the shoes of people passing by just to earn a few coins.
In today’s world, many people feel ashamed to talk about their poor days. But VM Bechain talks about his childhood with his head held high. He managed a brutal daily routine. He worked all day under the burning hot sun on the roadside, and when night fell, he went straight to an evening college to complete his graduation. He always gives one golden piece of advice to the new generation:
“Never feel bad about doing honest physical labor. The only true shame in life is sitting idle and doing nothing.”
Making a World Record in Haryanvi Language

Vinod loved his culture deeply. He wanted to do something big for the Haryanvi language struggle. For many years, big critics said that local language does not have enough power to handle global books. To prove them completely wrong, Bechain did something historic. He took the famous English poems of global legends like William Shakespeare and John Keats. Then, he translated them into sweet Haryanvi.
His local version of the famous kids’ poem “Johny, Johny, Yes Papa” became a super hit among fans:
“Johny re Johny! Ha Babu, chinni khai se? Na Babu! Jhoot bola se? Na Babu! Munh na khol… Ha!”
He even translated global poems into a beautiful local book named ‘Jai’. This great work made him a proud holder of the India Book of Records.
Winning the Biggest Government Award
Hard work always pays off. In the year 2021, the Haryana Government gave him the highest honour for local art and literature. He became a proud Pandit Lakhmi Chand Award winner. He says this award gave him new energy to work even harder for his people.
Fighting for Self-Respect and Friendship
Bechain values his self-respect much more than money. During his chat with Peddler Media, a beautiful story from his past came out. Years ago, he go to Mumbai with a 16-member team along with his close friend and famous Haryanvi artist singer, Gajender Phogat. The show was fixed for a big amount of ₹3 Lakhs. But the event manager was very rude. He forced the artists to do a rehearsal before the show. Phogat lost his temper. He refused to be treated poorly.
Phogat knew that walking away meant a huge financial loss for both of them, so he asked Bechain what to do. Without thinking twice, Bechain said, “Let the money go, brother. Our friendship and dignity must remain alive.” They instantly cancelled the ₹3 Lakh show, walked out, and spent the next two days enjoying themselves at Chowpatty beach.
Exposing the Bad System and Flattery
Even after winning the biggest awards, life is still not easy for a true artist. Bechain ji did not hide his pain when talking about the government setup. He clearly said that the Haryana Kala Parishad has stopped his payments for 3 to 4 government functions.
He gave a solid line: ‘Politics may or may not have a system, but our system definitely has too much politics.’ He explained that the government gives a lot of budget for culture, but the big officers sitting at the top don’t do their work. He openly said that these officers spend 70% of their time doing ‘pani marna’ (flattery) for the Chief Minister or Chief Secretary just to save their big chairs. Because of this, poor local artists are struggling even for their daily bread.
Deep Lesson for Today’s Youth
“Before finishing the interview, Bechain ji gave a solid piece of advice to today’s youth. He said that young boys and girls are only busy watching reels all day and have completely stopped reading books. Because of this, they are losing their thinking power. In his pure local style, he warned, ‘If you don’t read books, your brain’s engine will completely jam—bhatha baith jawe hai!’“
At last, he ended the chat with a super hit and heart-touching shayari about the daily struggles of our farmers. These deep lines will directly touch your soul:
“Kheti bhi kar dekhi aur pyaar bhi karke dekha,
Rahe dono saude ghaate ke, din-raat mar ke dekha!”
From polishing shoes on the streets of Bhiwani to creating a world record, VM Bechain’s life teaches us just one thing—if you have hard work and honesty, no one can stop you in this world.
