Satluj Movie Review: Diljit Dosanjh’s Career-Best Act

Satluj movie review is what everyone’s searching for right now, and the story behind the film is just as gripping as the film itself. Directed by Honey Trehan, Satluj is based on the real life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist who took on Punjab’s most powerful institutions during the state’s darkest years.

The film has arrived with a massive talking point already attached to it. Originally titled Ghallughara, then Punjab ’95, the project spent over three years fighting India’s Censor Board before finally streaming uncut, only to be pulled from ZEE5 India within two days of release. It remains available on ZEE5 Global.

Satluj Movie Review: Story

The film is set in 1995 and follows Jaswant Singh, a bank manager in Amritsar living a quiet life with his wife Pammi and their children. What starts as simple curiosity over unexplained disappearances slowly pulls him into a fight against a system far bigger than himself.

Diljit Dosanjh never plays Jaswant as a larger-than-life hero. He gets scared, he hesitates, and the people around him keep asking him to let it go. That honesty is what makes the film hit as hard as it does.

Satluj Movie Review: Direction And Writing

Honey Trehan avoids every trick used in typical investigative dramas. There is no dramatic background score pushing you to feel a certain way, and the film trusts silence more than speeches to carry its weight.

The screenplay stays gripping through most of the investigation, saving its most disturbing moment for the climax. Where the film does lose some steam is pacing, with several stretches that could have been trimmed to make the runtime feel lighter.

Satluj Movie Review: Cast Performance

Diljit Dosanjh

This is being called one of the finest performances of his career, and it works precisely because he never tries too hard. His restraint is what makes the character’s fear and courage both feel real.

The supporting cast holds its own against Diljit’s performance. Suvinder Vicky’s scenes as SSP Surjit Singh Sugga and Kanwaljit Singh’s confrontation scenes as DGP Bitta stand out as some of the film’s sharpest moments.

Geetika Vidya Ohlyan

As Pammi, she brings quiet strength to a role that could have easily been reduced to just a worried wife in the background.

Why Was Satluj Removed From ZEE5 India?

Less than two days after its July 3 premiere, ZEE5 pulled Satluj from its Indian catalogue, officially citing only vague “current developments” as the reason. The film remains available on ZEE5 Global for viewers outside India.

Government sources later told multiple news outlets that certain portions of the film had the potential to be misused by anti-India elements, with concerns specifically raised about the film being exploited to build support for the pro-Khalistan movement ahead of the Punjab elections. Sources said national security concerns were the deciding factor in the decision.

This is not the first time the film has run into trouble over its subject matter. The Censor Board had earlier demanded 127 cuts before certification, including reducing references to extrajudicial killings, and the film was also reportedly pulled from a planned premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023 over similar concerns.

Diljit Dosanjh responded to the removal by comparing the film’s fate to that of Jaswant Singh Khalra himself, the activist he plays, saying the film was facing a similar attempt to silence its voice. He also told viewers in an Instagram Live session that he expected the takedown and had encouraged fans to watch or download the film while it was still available in India.

Satluj is not an easy watch, and it is not trying to be. What it delivers instead is one of Diljit Dosanjh’s most sincere performances, backed by a director who trusts the true story enough to not oversell it.

If you want a film that respects its subject and stays with you long after it ends, this one is worth your time, wherever you can still find it streaming.
