Diljit Dosanjh’s Satluj Movie Taken Down From ZEE5 In India

Diljit Dosanjh‘s Satluj Movie has been pulled from ZEE5 in India, less than two days after its release. The film premiered on July 3 and streamed for the first time without any cuts, only for the platform to remove it from its Indian catalogue days later. It remains available on ZEE5 Global for viewers outside the country.

ZEE5 has not given a clear public reason for the takedown, officially citing only vague “current developments.” But behind the scenes, government sources have since come forward with an explanation that has made this one of the biggest entertainment stories of the week.

Why Satluj Movie Was Actually Pulled Down

Government sources told several news outlets that certain portions of the film had the potential to be misused by anti-India elements. Specifically, there were concerns that parts of the story could be used to build support for the pro-Khalistan movement, especially with Punjab elections approaching.

Sources also said that national security concerns were the main factor behind the decision, adding that the matter was not about politics. This explanation only surfaced a day after the removal, once the film’s disappearance from ZEE5 India had already gone viral online.

Satluj’s Long History With Censorship

This is far from the first time Satluj has faced resistance over its subject matter. The film was originally titled Ghallughara, then changed to Punjab ’95, before finally releasing as Satluj after over three years of back and forth with India’s Censor Board.

During certification, the board had demanded 127 cuts, including reducing references to extrajudicial killings, a core part of the film’s story. The film was also reportedly pulled from a planned premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023, with sources at the time citing political factors behind that decision as well.

What Satluj Movie Is Actually About

Satluj is based on the real life of Jaswant Singh Khalra, a human rights activist from Amritsar who exposed the disappearance and mass cremation of more than 25,000 people during Punjab’s insurgency-era crackdowns in the 1990s. Khalra was abducted and killed by police officers in 1995, shortly after his findings became public.

Diljit Dosanjh plays Khalra in the film, alongside Arjun Rampal, Kanwaljit Singh, Suvinder Vicky and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan, in a story that traces one man’s decision to keep asking questions a system wanted buried.

How Diljit Dosanjh Reacted

Diljit addressed the removal directly, comparing the film’s fate to that of the man he plays on screen, saying the film was facing an attempt to silence it just as Khalra’s own voice had once been silenced. He said this while speaking on Instagram Live shortly after the news broke.

He also revealed that he expected the takedown before it happened, and had quietly encouraged fans over the weekend to watch or download the film while it was still accessible in India.

What Happens Next For Satluj Movie

For now, Satluj remains unavailable to Indian viewers on ZEE5, while continuing to stream for international audiences on ZEE5 Global. ZEE5 has said it continues to stand by the film and its creators, even as the platform waits for further clarity on when, or if, it will return for Indian viewers.
